Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a battle. When we woke up, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was not present. We began searching for him. While we were in this state, we heard the sound of a millstone grinding, so we went towards that sound. There, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was present. We said: O Messenger of Allah! You get up from your bed and we are around you, yet you do not wake any of us, even though we are in the enemy's land? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A messenger from Allah came to me and gave me a choice between two things: either half of my Ummah would be admitted to Paradise, or I would be granted the opportunity of intercession. So I chose intercession.” Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray that Allah includes me among those for whom intercession is granted. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: “O Allah! Include Abu Musa among those for whom intercession is granted.” Then another said: Pray for me as well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The second is also like that.” Then another said, and when the number increased, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “My intercession will be for every person who bears witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:

➊ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was extremely compassionate towards his ummah. Therefore, it is obligatory upon the people of the ummah to love the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), to comply with his commands, to follow his example, to send blessings (salat) upon him, and to love and respect his noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum).

➋ Instead of only half of the ummah, there is hope that more people will be forgiven through intercession; for this reason, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) selected this (option).

➌ The intercession (shafa‘ah) of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is subject to the permission of Allah; therefore, one should supplicate to Allah alone, that He include us among those for whom the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) will be granted permission to intercede.
