Quran was revealed in seven modes of recitation
Hadith 1076
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْقَطَّانُ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ بِبَغْدَادَ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مَرْوَانَ الْعُثْمَانِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا الدَّرَاوَرْدِيُّ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ابْنِ أَخِي الزُّهْرِيُّ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ الزُّهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : "أَقْرَأَنِي جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ عَلَى حَرْفٍ ، فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَسْتَزِيدُهُ ، فَيَزِيدُنِي حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَى سَبْعَةِ أَحْرُفٍ "، قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ : السَّبْعَةُ الأَحْرُفُ إِنَّمَا هِيَ الأَمْرُ إِذَا كَانَ وَاحِدًا لا يَخْتَلِفُ فِيهِ حَلالٌ وَحَرَامٌ لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَخِي الزُّهْرِيِّ ، إِلا الدَّرَاوَرْدِيُّ
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibreel (peace be upon him) taught me one mode (harf), but I kept asking for more, so he kept granting me until it reached seven modes." Zuhri says: The meaning of seven modes is that as long as they remain in the same meaning, and there is no change in what is lawful and unlawful.
