Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Jacob (peace be upon him) had a foster brother, who one day said to Jacob (peace be upon him): ‘Jacob! Why has your eyesight gone and why has your back become bent?’ He replied: ‘My eyesight has gone from weeping over Joseph (peace be upon him), and the grief for my son Benjamin has bent my back.’ At that moment, Gabriel (peace be upon him) came and said: ‘O Jacob (peace be upon him)! Allah, the Exalted, sends you greetings of peace and says: Do you not feel ashamed that you complain about Me to others besides Me?’ So Jacob (peace be upon him) said: ‘Indeed, I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah.’ Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: ‘O Jacob! The One to Whom you complain, Allah, knows it well.’ Then Jacob (peace be upon him) said: ‘O my Lord! Do You not have mercy on an old man? O Allah! You have taken my eyesight, You have bent my back, so return my flower Joseph to me so that I may smell him before my death. O Allah! Then do with me as You wish.’ Then Gabriel (peace be upon him) came and said: ‘Jacob! Allah sends you greetings of peace and says: Rejoice and let your heart be glad. By My honor and majesty, even if both of them had died, I would surely have brought them back to life for you. Now arrange food for the poor, for My most beloved servants are the poor, and do you know why your eyesight was taken, and why your back was bent, and why what Joseph’s brothers said was done? Because you slaughtered a goat and a poor man came to you while he was fasting, but you did not give him food.’ And after that, whenever Jacob (peace be upon him) intended to eat breakfast, he would send a caller who would announce: ‘If there is any poor person among the needy who is fasting, let him come and break his fast with Jacob (peace be upon him).’”
