Hadith 1010

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الأَهْوَازِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ النَّضْرٍ الأَحْوَلُ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، عَنْ بِلالِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْمُزَنِيِّ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : "إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُلْقِي الْكَلِمَةَ مِنْ رِضْوَانِ اللَّهِ مَا يُلْقِي لَهَا بَالا ، فَيُكْتَبُ بِهَا مِنْ أَهْلِ رِضْوَانِ اللَّهِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ، وَإِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُلْقِي الْكَلِمَةَ مِنْ سَخَطِ اللَّهِ مَا يُلْقِي لَهَا بَالا ، فَيُكْتَبُ بِهَا مِنْ أَهْلِ سَخَطِ اللَّهِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ "، لَمْ يَرْوِهِ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ ، إِلا مُعْتَمِرٌ ، وَعُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، الَّذِي رَوَى عَنْهُ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ ، هُوَ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ ، وَقَدْ رَوَى عَنْهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَجْلانَ
Sayyiduna Bilal bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “A man utters a word that pleases Allah, without giving it much importance, and he is recorded among those who please Allah until the Day of Resurrection. And a man utters a word that angers Allah, without giving it much importance, and he is recorded among those who incur Allah’s anger until the Day of Resurrection.”

Explanation:
1:
From this hadith, it is understood that one should avoid idle talk,
and should strive that only beneficial and truthful speech, as needed, comes from one's tongue.
While speaking, the pleasure of Allah should be kept in view,
because any speech that is false or idle will be a cause of Allah's displeasure.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ There is danger in associating with rulers, as one may be compelled to endorse their wrongful actions or statements. For this reason, cautious elders do not prefer to socialize much with government officials. However, if one goes to them to help a needy or oppressed person, or to admonish them regarding a mistake, then there is no harm.

➋ Rulers are influenced by their advisors; therefore, one who gives them bad advice is a great criminal and is a partner in their wrongful actions.

➌ Sometimes, a matter that appears trivial outwardly can have far-reaching consequences. Therefore, those who hold important positions in society should speak with great caution.

➍ Whether politicians, scholars, or officers, their responsibility is very delicate. They should remain conscious of this.

➎ The noble scholars (ulama) should, when government officials seek their counsel, give them correct advice; and when they request admonition, they should admonish them for the sake of Allah in such a way that benefits the common Muslim.

Benefit:
From this hadith, it is understood that every word should be spoken thoughtfully and with understanding. Because of a single word that comes from a person's tongue, Allah Ta'ala can become displeased until the Day of Judgment, and because of a single word, Allah Ta'ala can become pleased with a person until the Day of Judgment. In life, there are two moments of great trial for a person: one is the time of happiness, and the other is the time of sorrow. In these two moments, people often utter such words that can lead them to disbelief (kufr), and the words spoken at these two times can become a source of misery for them throughout their lives. On this occasion, I would advise all my Muslim brothers and sisters, especially at times of happiness and sorrow, to control their tongues. A person should always remain in a state of patience (sabr), remembrance (dhikr), and gratitude (shukr).
