The Book of Merits
(وَصِيَّةُ حَضْرَةِ عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِعَدَمِ تَرْكِ الخِلَافَةِ)
(The testament of Hazrat Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, to not abandon the caliphate)
Hadith 6077
وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «يَا عُثْمَانُ إِنَّهُ لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ يُقَمِّصُكَ قَمِيصًا فَإِنْ أَرَادُوكَ عَلَى خَلْعِهِ فَلَا تَخْلَعْهُ لَهُمْ» . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَابْنُ مَاجَهْ وَقَالَ التِّرْمِذِيُّ فِي الحَدِيث قصَّة طَوِيلَة
`A'isha reported the Prophet as saying, "Perhaps God will clothe you with a shirt, `Uthman, and if the people want you to take it off, do not take it off for them." Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying the tradition contains a long story.
