Mishkat al-Masabih
كتاب الرقاقThe Book of Heart-Softeners
(زُهْدُ السَّيِّدِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا)
(The detachment of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, from the world)
Hadith 5266
وَعَن زيدِ بنِ أسلمَ قَالَ: اسْتَسْقَى يَوْمًا عُمَرُ فَجِيءَ بِمَاءٍ قَدْ شيبَ بعسلٍ فَقَالَ: إِنَّه لطيِّبٌ لكني أَسْمَعُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ نَعَى عَلَى قَوْمٍ شَهَوَاتِهِمْ فَقَالَ (أَذْهَبْتُمْ طَيِّبَاتِكُمْ فِي حَيَاتِكُمُ الدُّنْيَا وَاسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِهَا) فَأَخَافُ أَنْ تَكُونَ حَسَنَاتُنَا عُجِّلَتْ لَنَا فَلَمْ يشربْه. رَوَاهُ رزين
Zaid bin Aslam (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: One day Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked for water, and honey mixed with water was presented to him. He said: "This is very good, but I hear the command of Allah, the Exalted, that He criticized a people for their desires, saying: 'You have received your good things in the life of this world and you have enjoyed them.' I fear that the reward for our good deeds may be given to us in this world only." Therefore, he did not drink it. Lam Ajidahu, narrated by Razeen.
