Mishkat al-Masabih
كتاب الرقاقThe Book of Heart-Softeners
(مَكَانَةُ الدُّنْيَا كَوْقْفَةٍ قَصِيرَةٍ لِلرَّاكِبِ)
(The status of the world is like a brief pause for a traveler)
Hadith 5188
وَعَن ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَامَ عَلَى حَصِيرٍ فَقَامَ وَقَدْ أَثَّرَ فِي جَسَدِهِ فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْ أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نَبْسُطَ لَكَ وَنَعْمَلَ. فَقَالَ: «مَا لِي وَلِلدُّنْيَا؟ وَمَا أَنَا وَالدُّنْيَا إِلَّا كَرَاكِبٍ اسْتَظَلَّ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ ثُمَّ رَاحَ وَتَرَكَهَا» . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالتِّرْمِذِيُّ وَابْن مَاجَه
It is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) slept on a mat, and when he got up, the marks of that (mat) were visible on his blessed body. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! If you command us, we will prepare a soft bed for you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What have I to do with the world? I and the world are like a rider who stops under the shade of a tree, then departs and leaves it behind." Hasan, narrated by Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah.
