Hadith 5142
It is narrated from Abu Bakr Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: "O people! You recite this verse: 'O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you are guided, no one who goes astray can harm you.' I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'Indeed, when people see an evil and do not stop it, then it is near that Allah will encompass them all with His punishment.'" (Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi, and Imam Tirmidhi declared it authentic.) And in the narration of Abu Dawood: "When they see the oppressor (committing oppression) and do not restrain his hands, then it is near that Allah will encompass them all with punishment." And in another narration of Abu Dawood: "Any nation in which sins are committed, and they do not stop them despite having the power to do so, then it is near that Allah will encompass them all with punishment." In another narration: "If a minority of a nation becomes involved in sin, and the majority, though not committing the sin themselves, do not stop those who do, (then they too will be afflicted with punishment)." Its chain is authentic. Narrated by Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi, and Abu Dawood.
