Hadith 4662
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When Allah created Adam (peace be upon him) and breathed the soul into him, he sneezed and said, 'Alhamdulillah' (All praise is due to Allah). He praised Allah by Allah’s guidance, so his Lord said to him: 'May Allah have mercy on you, O Adam!' Go to that group of angels who are sitting and say to them: 'As-salamu alaikum!' So he went and said: 'As-salamu alaikum!' They replied: 'Wa alaikas-salam wa rahmatullah!' Then he returned to his Lord, who said: 'Indeed, this is your greeting and the greeting of your descendants among themselves.' Allah commanded him while both His hands were closed: 'Choose whichever you wish from among them.' He said: 'I have chosen the right hand of my Lord, and both hands of my Lord are right and blessed.' Then Allah spread out His right hand, and in it were Adam and his descendants. He said: 'O Lord! Who are these?' He replied: 'These are your descendants. The lifespan of every human being was written between his eyes, and among them was a man who was the brightest of them (in face).' He said: 'O Lord! Who is this?' He replied: 'This is your son Dawud (David), and I have written his lifespan as forty years.' He said: 'O Lord! Increase his lifespan.' Allah said: 'This is what I have written for him.' He said: 'O Lord! I have given him sixty years from my own lifespan.' Allah said: 'This is your decision.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Then he remained in Paradise as long as Allah willed, then he was sent down from there, and Adam (peace be upon him) used to count his age. When the Angel of Death came to him, he said: 'You have come early, for my age was written as a thousand years.' He replied: 'Yes, but you gave sixty years to your son Dawud (David).' He denied it, and so his descendants also denied. And he forgot, so his descendants also forget.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'From that day, the command was given to write and to bear witness.'" Its chain is Hasan. Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.
