Ibn Mas'ud reported God’s messenger as saying, "The devil draws near to man, and so does the angel. The devil’s approach consists of promise of what is evil, and denial of what is true, whereas the angel’s approach consists of promise of what is good and confirmation of what is true. When anyone experiences the latter, let him know that it comes from God and let him praise God; but if he experiences the other, let him seek refuge in God from the accursed devil.” Then he recited, "The devil promises you poverty and urges you to iniquity.” Tirmidhi transmitted it, and said this is a gharib tradition.

Hadith Authentication: The chain of narration for this report is weak. Besides al-Tirmidhi [2988], it has also been narrated by al-Nasa'i [الكبريٰ : 11051] and Ibn Hibban [الاحسان : 993 دوسرا نسخه : 997]. The principal narrator of this report, Ata ibn al-Sa'ib, suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) due to memory impairment in the later part of his life. See: [نهاية الاغتباط بمن رمي من الرواة بالاختلاط 71] and al-Kawakib al-Nayyirat [ص319] ◈ Abu Hatim al-Razi said: «اختلط بأخرة» “He (Ata ibn al-Sa'ib) suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) at the end of his life.” [علل الحديث 2؍242 ح2220]
The following narrators heard from Ata ibn al-Sa'ib before his confusion (ikhtilat): ① Shu'bah ② Sufyan al-Thawri ③ Hammad ibn Zayd ④ Hammad ibn Salamah according to the majority ⑤ Hisham al-Dastuwa'i according to Abu Dawud ⑥ Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah ⑦ Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani ⑧ Zuhayr ⑨ Zaydah ibn Qudamah ⑩ Al-A'mash See: al-Kawakib al-Nayyirat with commentary [ص319 تا 335] It is not established that Abu'l-Ahwas Salam ibn Sulaym heard from Ata ibn al-Sa'ib before his confusion (ikhtilat).

´Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud:` that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Indeed the Shaitan has an effect on the son of Adam, and the angel also has en effect. As for the Shaitan, it is by threatening evil repercussions and rejecting the truth. As for the effect of the angel, it is by his promise of a good end and believing in the truth. Whoever finds that, let him know that it is from Allah, and let him praise Allah for it. Whoever finds the other then let him seek refuge with Allah from the Shaitan (the outcast) then recite: Shaitan threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit Fahisha (2:268)."
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation: 1: That is, when feelings of goodness and virtue arise in his heart, he should understand that these are from Allah.
2: Satan threatens you with poverty and commands you to indecency (al-Baqarah: 268)
