Abu Burdah bin Abu Musa narrates: Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Do you know what my father said to your father? He said: I do not know. He said: My father said to your father: Abu Musa, does it please you that our Islam in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), our migration in his company, our striving in his company, and all the deeds we did with him remain established and preserved for us, and for the deeds we did after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we remain equal (neither sin nor reward)? At this, your father said to my father: No, by Allah! After the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we strove in jihad, performed prayers, fasted, did many good deeds, and many people accepted Islam at our hands, and we hope for the reward of these deeds. My father said: But I, by the One in whose hand is the soul of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), prefer that those deeds (which we did with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) remain established for us, and for all the deeds we did after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we attain equal salvation. I (Abu Burdah) said: Indeed, your father (Umar, may Allah be pleased with him), by Allah! was better than my father. Narrated by al-Bukhari.
