Hadith 5287

It is narrated from Abu Kabsha Anmari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "There are three qualities upon which I swear, and I will tell you a hadith, so remember it. The things upon which I swear are these: Charity does not decrease a servant's wealth; if a servant is wronged and he is patient over it, then Allah increases his honor in return; and when a servant asks from others, Allah makes him fall into poverty. As for the thing I am going to tell you, remember it well." Then he said: "The world is for four kinds of people: One is the servant whom Allah has given wealth and knowledge, and he fears his Lord regarding it, maintains family ties, and acts for the sake of Allah according to that (knowledge); this is the highest rank. Another is the servant whom Allah has given knowledge but not wealth, and his intention is good; he says: If I had wealth, I would spend like such-and-such (wealthy) person; the reward for both of them is equal. And another is the servant whom Allah has given wealth but not knowledge, so he goes astray because of his wealth without knowledge, and he neither fears his Lord, nor maintains family ties, nor spends it as is right; this person is at the worst level. And another is the servant whom Allah has given neither wealth nor knowledge, and he says: If I had wealth, I would act (i.e., spend) like such-and-such person; he only intends (evil), and the sin of both of them is equal." (Tirmidhi) And he said: This hadith is authentic. Its chain is weak, said al-Tirmidhi.
