Mishkat al-Masabih
كتاب الرقاقThe Book of Heart-Softeners
(الزُّهْدُ هُوَ الكَسْبُ الحَلَالُ وَنَقْصُ الآمالِ)(Asceticism is lawful earning and reduction of hopes)
Hadith 5283

وَعَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مَالِكًا وَسُئِلَ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا؟ قَالَ: طِيبُ الْكَسْبِ وَقِصَرُ الْأَمَلِ. رَوَاهُ الْبَيْهَقِيُّ فِي «شعب الْإِيمَان»
Zaid bin Hussain (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates, I heard from Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him), he was asked, what is meant by renunciation of the world? He replied: Lawful earning and having few hopes. Its chain of narration is weak, narrated by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman.
