Hadith 5131

Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When this verse was revealed: "Those who believe and do not mix their faith with injustice," this was hard on the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and they said: O Messenger of Allah! Who among us has not wronged himself? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It does not mean that; rather, it means shirk (associating partners with Allah). Have you not heard the saying of Luqman to his son: 'O my son! Do not associate anything with Allah, for indeed shirk is a great injustice.'" In another narration: "It is not as you think; it is as Luqman said to his son." Agreed upon.
