Hadith 4809

وَعَن أبي سعيدٍ الخدريِّ قَالَ: بَيْنَا نَحْنُ نَسِيرُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بالعرج إِذْ عَرَضَ شَاعِرٌ يُنْشِدُ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «خُذُوا الشَّيْطَانَ أَوْ أَمْسِكُوا الشَّيْطَانَ لِأَنْ يَمْتَلِئَ جَوْفُ رَجُلٍ قَيْحًا خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَمْتَلِئَ شِعْرًا» . رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ
Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates: We were traveling with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in (the region of Yemen) 'Arj when a poet appeared before us and began reciting poetry. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Seize this devil," or he said: "Stop this devil (from reciting poetry), for it is better for a man's belly to be filled with pus than to be filled with poetry." Narrated by Muslim.
