It is narrated from Tufail bin Abi bin Ka'b that he used to come to Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he would go with him to the market in the morning. The narrator states: When we would go to the market, Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would greet everyone he passed by there—those engaged in small business, the wealthy, the poor, and anyone else. Tufail narrates: One day I came to Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he told me to go to the market. I said to him: What will you do in the market? You do not stop at any sale, nor do you inquire about any transaction, nor do you ask about prices, nor do you sit in the gatherings of the market. So please stay here and let us talk. The narrator states: Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: O man with a belly! The narrator states: Tufail had a large belly. We go for the purpose of greeting (saying salam); we greet everyone we meet. Its chain is authentic. Narrated by Malik and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman.
