Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: A group of Jews sought permission to meet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and they said: “Death be upon you.” I said: “Rather, death and curse be upon you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Aisha! Indeed, Allah is gentle and loves gentleness in every matter.” I said: “Did you not hear what they said?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I replied: ‘And upon you (death be upon you).’” And in another narration: the words are “upon you,” and they did not mention the conjunction “and.” And in the narration of Bukhari: Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “The Jews came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: ‘Death be upon you.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: ‘And upon you.’” Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “Death be upon you, may Allah curse you, and may His anger be upon you.” (Upon hearing this) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Aisha! Hold back, be gentle, and avoid harshness and foul speech.” She said: “Did you not hear what they said?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Did you not hear what I said? I replied to them, and my supplication against them was accepted, while their supplication against me was not accepted.” And in the narration of Muslim: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do not be abusive, for Allah does not like indecency or forced indecency.” Agreed upon.
