Hadith 40

Mu'adh b. Jabal reported that God’s messenger said to him, “The keys of paradise are the testimony that there is no god but God.” Ahmad transmitted it.

Hadith Authentication:
The chain of narration for this report is weak. It has been narrated by al-Bazzar [البحرالزخار104/7 ح2660 وكشف الاستار : ح2], al-Tabarani [الدعاء : 1497], and Ibn ‘Adi [الكامل 4 1356 دوسرا نسخه 5 60] through the chain of «اسماعيل بن عياش : ثنا ابن ابي حسين عن شهر بن حوشب عن معاذ بن جبل رضي الله عنه».

◈ Al-Bazzar said:
And Shahr ibn Hawshab did not hear (anything) from Mu‘adh ibn Jabal. [

◈ Hafiz Haythami writes:
“And there is a break (inqita‘) between Shahr (ibn Hawshab) and Mu‘adh in this chain. The narrations of Isma‘il ibn ‘Ayyash from the people of Hijaz are weak, and this is among those (weak) narrations.”

Note:
Shahr ibn Hawshab is a narrator regarding whom there is a difference of opinion. According to my research, the majority of hadith scholars have declared him trustworthy and truthful, therefore his hadith is hasan (good). Also see the monthly journal “al-Hadith”: 17 p. 25, and issue: 63 p. 37.
