Hadith 274

Hudhaifa said, “ If you Qur'an readers follow a straight course you will have attained great precedence; but if you go right and left you will have fallen into vast error.” Bukhari transmitted it.

Hadith Commentary:
That is, you will be superior to those people who will come after you.
This is the translation when the word in the hadith "faqad sabaqtum bihi" is in the active voice. If it is in the passive voice "subiqatum bihi," then the translation will be: "You should remain firm upon the hadith and the Qur'an, because other people follow the hadith and the Qur'an."
They have gone far ahead of you, meaning they have moved far away.

Hadith Commentary:

By "Qurra" is meant those who possess knowledge of the Book and the Sunnah.
In the early period of Islam, this term was used for the scholars.
Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu, addressing the scholars, said:
You must follow the straight path (sirat al-mustaqim); do not pay any attention whatsoever to the various divergent ways (paths) to the right or left, otherwise you will stray far from the straight path.
The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
"Indeed, this is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow other ways, for they will separate you from His path." ()

In this hadith, the exhortation is given to remain steadfast upon the straight path (sirat al-mustaqim), and that is exclusively dependent upon following and emulating the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. All other paths besides this lead only to misguidance and deviation.
