وَعَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ قَالَ: إِنَّ هَذَا الْعِلْمَ دِينٌ فَانْظُرُوا عَمَّنْ تَأْخُذُونَ دِينَكُمْ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ
Ibn Sirin said, “This knowledge is a religion, so consider from whom you receive your religion.” Muslim transmitted it.

Fiqh of the Hadith:
➊ One should seek knowledge and ask for solutions to religious matters only from scholars who are of sound creed and are trustworthy and truthful.
➋ The foundation of religion is based on chains of transmission (isnads); therefore, any statement without a chain is to be rejected.
➌ One should avoid the people of innovation (ahl al-bid‘ah).
➍ Reasoning from the statements of the Companions and Successors (athar) is permissible and even commendable.
➎ The aforementioned athar is found in the introduction to Sahih Muslim, and its chain of transmission up to Imam Muhammad ibn Sirin rahimahullah is authentic.
➏ One should always be mindful of the upbringing and education of one’s dependents and the general public.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
Just as an animal cannot walk without legs, in the same way, a hadith cannot be accepted without a chain of transmission (isnad). If the question of the chain (isnad) did not exist, then every person would listen to something without investigation or verification and narrate it further, and that would become part of the religion. Thus, the protection and defense of the religion can be achieved through the chain of transmission (isnad); without it, the religion cannot be safeguarded from adulteration and innovations (bid‘ah).
