Hadith 245

Abu Darda’ told how God’s messenger, on an occasion when they were with him, turned his eyes to the sky and said, "This is a time when knowledge will be snatched away from men, so that they will be unable to acquire any.” Tirmidhi transmitted it.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai
Authentication of the Hadith:
Its chain of narration is hasan (good).
Al-Hakim [1؍99 ح338] and al-Dhahabi both declared it sahih (authentic), and its second chain is found in Musnad Ahmad [6؍26۔ 27], which Ibn Hibban [115], al-Hakim [1؍98۔ 99 ح337], and al-Dhahabi—all three—declared sahih (authentic), and its chain is hasan (good).

Jurisprudence of the Hadith:
➊ This hadith contains an indication towards the passing of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the cessation of revelation.
➋ In some parts of the Ummah, innovations (bid‘ah) and misguidance will arise, the real cause of their spread being lack of knowledge and ignorance.
➌ Before the Day of Judgment, ignorance will become widespread.

Explanation:
1:
That is, what benefit did those books bring them? Just as the Jews and Christians, despite having the Torah and the Gospel, could not derive benefit from them, near the end of times, the same will be the condition of you Muslims as well. Because your righteous scholars will come to an end, and the Qur’an will remain with you, yet you will still be deprived of its blessings.
