Ibn ‘Abbas reported God’s messenger as saying, “Be on your guard about tradition from me, except what you know; for he who lies about me deliberately will certainly come to his abode in hell.” Tirmidhi transmitted it,

Hafiz Zubair Ali Zai
Hadith Authentication:
Its chain of narration is weak.
◄ It has been narrated by Tirmidhi, Ahmad [1؍293 ح2675، 1؍323 ح2974، 1؍327 ح3024], Ibn Abi Shaybah [المصنف 8؍573 ح26244، المسند بحواله بيان الوهم والايهام لابن القطان 5؍253 ح2459], Darimi [1؍76 ح238], Tahawi [شرح مشكل الآثار 1؍358 ح392], Tabarani [المعجم الكبير 12؍35 -36 ح12393], Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili [المسند 4؍228 ح2338، 5؍11۔ ح2721], Baghawi [شرح السنه 1؍ 257 ح117، وقال : هذا حديث حسن], and Qadi Muhammad bin Salamah al-Quda'i [مسند الشهاب 1؍327 ح554] through the chain of «ابوعوانه الوضاح بن عبدالله اليشكري عن عبدالاعليٰ بن عامر الثعلبي عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنه».
◄ Imam Tirmidhi and Baghawi have called it hasan, but this chain is weak due to Abd al-A'la bin 'Amir.
Regarding him (Abd al-A'la), Haythami said:
«والأكثر عليٰ تضعيفه»
"And most are upon declaring him weak." [
That is, the majority have declared him weak, and whoever the majority of hadith scholars declare weak, he is indeed weak.
◄ Regarding Abd al-A'la al-Thalabi, Hafiz Dhahabi said:
«لين ضعفه أحمد»
"He is weak; Ahmad (bin Hanbal) declared him weak." [
◄ Imam Ahmad said:
«عبد الأعليٰ الثعلبي ضعيف الحديث عبدالاعليٰ الثعلبي»
"He is weak in hadith." [
◄ As a note, it is mentioned through the chain of 'Abd al-Wahhab bin Abi 'Ismah al-'Ukbari (whose reliability is unknown): «ثنا أحمد بن حميد عن أحمد بن حنبل» that regarding the aforementioned Abd al-A'la, it is narrated: «منكر الحديث عن سعيد بن جبير» that he used to narrate munkar (rejected) hadiths from Sa'id bin Jubayr.
↰ Its chain is weak due to Ibn Abi 'Ismah.

Note No. ①
Hafiz Ibn al-Qattan al-Fasi, after transmitting the aforementioned narration from Musnad Ibn Abi Shaybah with the chain of Abd al-A'la, said:
«فالحديث صحيح من هذا الطريق»
"Thus, this hadith is authentic through this chain." [
This is a strange error, because Ibn al-Qattan himself, regarding another narration, declared it «لا يصح»—i.e., not authentic—due to Abd al-A'la al-Thalabi, and he has transmitted criticism of the aforementioned Abd al-A'la from the noble hadith scholars.

Note No. ②
Ibn Jarir al-Tabari said:
«حدثنا ابن حميد قال : حدثنا جرير عن ليث عن بكر عن سعيد بن جبير عن ابن عباس قال : من تكلم فى القرآن برأيه فليتبوأ مقعده من النار»
"(Muhammad) bin Humayd (al-Razi) narrated to us, he said: Jarir (bin 'Abd al-Hamid) narrated to us, from Layth (bin Abi Sulaym), from Bakr (?), from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas radi Allahu anhuma (as a mawquf narration): Whoever speaks about the Qur'an based on his own opinion, let him seek his abode in the Fire."
◄ The chain of this narration is weak for three reasons:
➊ Muhammad bin Humayd al-Razi is weak and criticized according to the majority of hadith scholars.
➋ Layth bin Abi Sulaym is weak according to the majority of hadith scholars. See: [البدر المنير لابن الملقن 7؍227 خلاصة البدر المنير 78] and [زوائد ابن ماجه للبوصيري: 208]
➌ There is uncertainty regarding the identification of Bakr.
◄ Husayn Salim Asad (an Arab researcher) considered (Muhammad) bin Humayd (al-Razi) as 'Abd bin Humayd (!), Layth as Layth bin Sa'd (!), and Bakr as Bakr bin Sawadah (!), and wrote:
«وهذا إسناد صحيح»
"And this chain is authentic." [
↰ This is a strange error, and to call this chain with weak narrators authentic is absolutely incorrect.

Benefit:
The hadith of «من كذب على متعمدا فليتبوأ مقعده من النار» is established in Sahih al-Bukhari [110] and Sahih Muslim [3] from our master Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu as a marfu' narration, and it is mutawatir from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
