Anas reported God’s messenger as saying, “He who goes out in search of knowledge is in God’s path till he returns.” Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it.

Hadith Authentication:
The chain of narration for this report is weak.
◄ The narrators of this report—Khalid ibn Yazid al-‘Utki, Abu Ja‘far al-Razi, and Rabi‘ ibn Anas—were considered hasan al-hadith (acceptable in hadith) by the majority of hadith scholars due to their authentication. However:
Hafiz Ibn Hibban said regarding Rabi‘ ibn Anas:
“And people avoid the narration of Abu Ja‘far (al-Razi) from him (Rabi‘ ibn Anas), because there is much confusion in it.”
↰ This is a specific criticism, therefore it takes precedence over the general authentication. That is, the narrations reported by Abu Ja‘far al-Razi from Rabi‘ ibn Anas are weak, while the narrations reported by other trustworthy and reliable narrators are hasan (good) or sahih (authentic).
