(لَا مَنْظَرَ أَكْثَرُ رُعْبًا مِنَ الْقَبْرِ)(No scene is more terrifying than the grave)
Hadith 132
اُردوEn
وَعَن عُثْمَان رَضِي الله عَنهُ أَنه إِذَا وَقَفَ عَلَى قَبْرٍ بَكَى حَتَّى يَبُلَّ لِحْيَتَهُ فَقِيلَ لَهُ تُذْكَرُ الْجَنَّةُ وَالنَّارُ فَلَا تَبْكِي وَتَبْكِي مِنْ هَذَا فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «إِنَّ الْقَبْرَ أَوَّلُ مَنْزِلٍ مِنْ مَنَازِلِ الْآخِرَةِ فَإِنْ نَجَا مِنْهُ فَمَا بَعْدَهُ أَيْسَرُ مِنْهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَنْجُ مِنْهُ فَمَا بَعْدَهُ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُ قَالَ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا رَأَيْت منْظرًا قطّ إِلَّا الْقَبْر أَفْظَعُ مِنْهُ» . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَابْنُ مَاجَهْ. وَقَالَ التِّرْمِذِيُّ هَذَا حَدِيث غَرِيب
‘Uthman told that when he stood over a grave he would weep so sorely that the tears moistened his beard. Someone said to him, “You remember paradise and hell, without weeping, yet you are weeping over this." He replied that God’s messenger said, “The grave is the first stage of the next world ; if one escapes from it what follows is easier than it, but if one does not escape from it what follows is more severe than it." He further quoted God’s messenger as saying, “I have never seen a sight as horrible as the grave." Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it, and Tirmidhi said this is a gharib tradition.

Authentication of the Hadith:
The chain of narration (isnad) of this hadith is hasan (good).
It has been declared hasan gharib by al-Tirmidhi and sahih by al-Dhahabi. [تلخیص المستدرک 1؍371]
◄ In the chain of this hadith, Abu Sa‘id Hanni al-Barbari (the freed slave of ‘Uthman radi Allahu anhu) is a trustworthy (saduq) narrator. [تقریب التہذیب : 7266]
◄ The other narrator, ‘Abdullah ibn Buhayr ibn Raysan Abu Wa’il al-Qass al-San‘ani, is considered reliable (thiqah) by the majority of hadith scholars.
Therefore, the hadith is hasan. For details, see: [تهذيب الكمال 33/10] and others, and the rest of the chain is authentic.
Jurisprudence of the Hadith:
➊ Visiting graves for the remembrance of the Hereafter is a Sunnah.
➋ The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter.
➌ Remembering death and weeping out of fear of Allah is the practice (sunnah) of the Rightly Guided Caliphs.
➍ One should always remain distant from arrogance and spend one's entire life with humility.
➎ The heart of a believer always remains between fear and hope.
➏ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) also considered the punishment of the grave to be established, and by this is meant the earthly grave itself.
