Zaid b. Thabit said: While we were accompanying God’s messenger who was riding a she-mule in a garden belonging to the B. an-Najjar, the animal shied and almost unseated him. It happened that there were five or six graves there, so he asked if anyone knew who were buried in them. A man replied that he did, and on being asked when they died said it was in the period when the people were polytheists. The Prophet then said, “These people are being afflicted in their graves, and were it not that you would cease to bury, I would ask God to let you hear the punishment in the grave which I am hearing.” Then he turned facing us and said, “Seek refuge in God from the punishment of the fire.” They said, “We seek refuge in God from the punishment of the fire.” He said, “Seek refuge in God from the punishment in the grave.” They said, “We seek refuge in God from the punishment in the grave.” He said, “Seek refuge in God from trials both open and secret.” They said, “We seek refuge in God from trials both open and secret.” He said, “Seek refuge in God from the trial of ad-Dajjal!” They said, “We seek refuge in God from the trial of ad-Dajjal.” Muslim transmitted it.

Takhrij al-Hadith:
[صحيح مسلم 7213]
Fiqh al-Hadith:
➊ The punishment of the grave takes place on this very earth, and the animals near the grave hear it.
➋ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is not the knower of the unseen (‘alim al-ghayb); rather, this is an exclusive attribute of Allah alone.
➌ If ordinary people were to witness the punishment of the grave, the ignorant would flee in terror from burying the deceased, and even the people of knowledge would keep away from the dead of the common folk.
➍ The punishment of the grave is part of belief in the unseen (iman bil-ghayb).
➎ The grave refers to the earthly pit.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: It is understood from the ahadith that Allah Ta'ala has concealed the torment of Barzakh from jinn and mankind; they have absolutely no awareness of it. However, other creatures besides them have some perception and sense of it. In the garden of Banu Najjar, those whose graves were there were being punished. The mule upon which you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) were riding sensed this and was affected by it, but your companions and associates had no awareness of it, while you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) were hearing that torment. Therefore, you said to your companions, "If Allah Ta'ala were to unveil to you the condition of the torment of the grave as He has unveiled it to me, and if He were to let you hear the screams and cries of the dead, then there is a danger that you would become so terrified of death that you would not even be able to bury them. That is why I do not supplicate to Allah that He let you hear it as well. The reality is that whatever happens to the dead after death—if all of us were to see or hear it, we would not be able to carry out any work, and the system of the world would be thrown into chaos. After this, the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) directed attention to those things from which we should be concerned to seek protection: that He grant us refuge from the torment of Hell, the torment of the grave, and from every kind of apparent and hidden, open and concealed tribulation."
