Hadith 101

‏‏‏‏وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٌو قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَلَقَ خَلْقَهُ فِي ظُلْمَةٍ فَأَلْقَى عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ نُورِهِ فَمَنْ أَصَابَهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ النُّورِ اهْتَدَى وَمَنْ أَخْطَأَهُ ضَلَّ فَلذَلِك أَقُول: جف الْقلب على علم الله ". رَوَاهُ أَحْمد وَالتِّرْمِذِيّ
‘Abdallah b. ‘Amr reported that he heard God’s messenger say, “God created His creatures in darkness and cast some of His light upon them. Those on whom some of that light falls will have guidance, but those who are missed by it will go astray. On that account I say that the pen has no more to write about God’s knowledge.” Ahmad and Tirmidhi transmitted it.

Hadith Authentication:
The chain of narration for this report is hasan (good).
● Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash is a narrator about whom there is a difference of opinion. If he narrates hadith from his trustworthy and reliable Syrian (Shami) teachers, then the narration is hasan li-dhatihi (good in itself), but if he narrates from non-Syrians, such as the Hijazis, then it is weak. See: Tabaqat al-Mudallisin by Hafiz Ibn Hajar [68؍3] and the general books of narrators.
● According to the preferred opinion, Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash was not a mudallis (one who practices tadlis). See: my book al-Fath al-Mubin fi Tahqiq Tabaqat al-Mudallisin [ص49]
● Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash is not alone in narrating this report; rather, Imam al-Awza'i rahimahullah has also followed him up, meaning that al-Awza'i narrated the same report from Yahya ibn Abi 'Amr al-Saybani (al-Himsi al-Shami: trustworthy).

A group has narrated it from Yahya ibn Abi 'Amr as well. For example, see: Kitab al-Sunnah by Ibn Abi 'Asim [242] and others.
● Yahya ibn Abi 'Amr is also not alone in narrating this report; rather, Rabi'ah ibn Yazid (al-Dimashqi: trustworthy, devout) narrated it from 'Abdullah ibn (Fayruz) al-Daylami (trustworthy, among the senior Tabi'in). See: Musnad Ahmad [ج2 ص 176 6644 وسندہ صحیح]

Fiqh of the Hadith:
➊ Predestination (qadar) is true.
➋ Here, "creation" refers to humans and jinn, because angels were created from light.
➌ This narration from Sunan al-Tirmidhi was omitted in Hafiz al-Mizzi rahimahullah's book Tuhfat al-Ashraf. Also see: al-Masnad al-Jami' [ج11 ص 17 ح8330]

Explanation:
1:
That is, the preordained writing of guidance and misguidance has already been inscribed in eternity (azal) according to Allah’s knowledge;
there can be no alteration whatsoever in it.
