´It was narrated that ‘Aishah said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Allah and His angels send blessings upon those who complete the rows, and whoever fills a gap, Allah will raise him one degree in status thereby.’”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
(1)
Filling the gap in the row means that if two people are standing so far apart in the row that there is enough space between them for another person, then someone who comes later should stand in that space. Otherwise, he should tell them to come closer together so that no empty space remains between them.
(2)
If there is space for a person at the edge of the first row and people have already stood in the row behind, then someone who comes later should stand in the empty space at the edge of the front row—this too is included in joining the rows.
(3)
Wherever there is an empty space in the row, the worshippers at that spot should each move closer towards the imam. Each person to the right of the imam should move closer to his companion on the left, and each person to the left of the imam should move closer to his companion on the right. In this way, the gap will be filled. If they do the opposite, the gap will not be filled, or people will have to move away from the imam, which is not appropriate.
