´It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:` “When the Imam says: ‘Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him),’ say: ‘Allahumma, Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (O Allah! O our Lord! To You is the praise).’”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefit:
In the recitation of tasmi‘ (سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ), tahmid (رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ), and other supplications, both the individual praying alone, the imam, and the follower (muqtadi) should all participate. This is what the generality of the ahadith necessitates. Imam Shafi‘i rahimahullah, Malik, ‘Ata’, Abu Dawud, Abu Burdah, Muhammad ibn Sirin, Ishaq, and Dawud rahimahullah are all inclined towards this view. For details, see (Nayl al-Awtar, Bab Ma Yaqulu fi Raf‘ihi min al-Ruku‘ wa Ba‘da Intisabihi, 2/279). However, some people have taken the other view as well, such as the statement of Imam Sha‘bi rahimahullah. But the first position is the more correct (rajih) one.
