´It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “When the Imam says: ‘Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah (Allah hears those who praise Him),’ say: ‘Rabbana wa lakal-hamd (O our Lord, to You is the praise).’”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Allah hears the words (or praise) of those who praise Him.
Allah Almighty hears everything from everyone; here, “hearing” means to listen with pleasure and acceptance.
In other words, the imam is encouraging the followers to praise Allah and is giving them glad tidings that He hears and accepts it.
Therefore, the followers praise Allah.
➋ “When the imam says... then you say...”
From these words, some scholars have deduced that (سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ) is the imam’s responsibility, not the followers’, and (رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ) should be said only by the followers, not the imam. However, this deduction is not correct.
