Benefits and Issues:
➊
From both these narrations, it is understood
that recitation other than Surah al-Fatihah is prohibited in audible (jahri) prayers.
In one narration, these words are mentioned: (فَلَا تَقْرٌءوا بِشَئٍْ مِّنَ الْقُرْآنِ إِذَا جَهَرْتُ إِلَّابِاُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ) (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Salat, Chapters on the Elaboration of the Opening of Prayer, Chapter: Whoever Leaves Recitation in His Prayer Except for the Opening of the Book, Hadith: 824)
“When I recite aloud, then recite only Surah al-Fatihah.”
However, in one hadith of Sahih Muslim, it is mentioned
that a similar incident occurred in a silent (sirri) prayer as well.
That in the prayer of Zuhr or Asr, one of the followers recited ﴿سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى﴾, so the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) expressed disapproval.
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Salat, Chapter: The Prohibition of the Follower Reciting Aloud Behind His Imam, Hadith 398)
➋
Imam Nawawi rahimahullah, in his commentary on Sahih Muslim, has mentioned a heading for this hadith.
From this, it is indicated that the follower had recited Surah al-A‘la in a loud voice.
The words of “contention” also point to this.
And Allah knows best.
In summary, in audible (jahri) prayers, after Surah al-Fatihah, the follower should not recite anything else.
However, in silent (sirri) prayers, he may recite another surah,
but he should not recite it aloud.
