Hadith 847

´It was narrated that Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘When the Imam recites, then listen attentively, and if he is sitting (in the prayer) then the first remembrance that anyone of you recites should be the Tashahhud.’”

Brief Explanation
1؎: That is, do not recite aloud; it does not mean that you should not recite Surah al-Fatihah, because without al-Fatihah the prayer is not valid. For, from other hadiths—which themselves are narrated from Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu—it is established that the follower (muqtadi) should recite Surah al-Fatihah in every prayer. It has just been mentioned above that Abu al-Sa’ib said to Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, “Sometimes I am behind the imam?” He replied, “O Persian! Recite it in your heart.” Rather, the meaning of the hadith is that during the imam’s recitation, the follower should not recite aloud, because doing so causes difficulty for the imam, and sometimes he forgets.

2؎: If the imam, due to some excuse, leads the prayer sitting, then the followers should pray standing if they are not excused. The ruling in this hadith—that if the imam leads sitting, then you should also pray sitting—is abrogated by the hadith of the illness of death (marad al-wafat).
