´It was narrated that Samurah bin Jundab said:` “There are two pauses which I memorized from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), but `Imran bin Husain denied that. We wrote to Ubayy bin Ka`b in Al-Madinah, and he wrote that Samurah had indeed memorized them.” (One of the narrators) Sa`eed said: "We said to Qatadah: 'What are these two pauses?' He said: 'When he started his prayer, and when he finished reciting.' Then later he said: 'And when he recited: 'Not (the way) of those who earned your anger, nor of those who went astray.' They used to like (for the Imam) when he had finished reciting to remain silent until he had caught his breath.'"

Brief Explanation
1؎: It is also permissible for the follower (muqtadi) to recite a surah behind the imam; then how could the recitation of Surah al-Fatihah not be permissible? However, it is preferable that the follower behind the imam suffice with only Surah al-Fatihah. Imam Muhammad has narrated in the Muwatta, mursal, from Abdullah bin Shaddad that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) led the prayer, and a person recited (aloud) behind him. The one next to him pinched him. When he finished the prayer, he asked: Why did you pinch me? The one next to him said: The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “Whoever has an imam, the recitation of the imam is sufficient for the follower.” By this is meant that, apart from Surah al-Fatihah, the follower should not recite any other surah. From all the ahadith of this chapter, it is established that in every prayer—whether obligatory (fard) or supererogatory (nafl), whether audible (jahr) or silent (sirri)—reciting Surah al-Fatihah is necessary. No prayer is valid without reciting al-Fatihah. This is the issue upon which the Imam of the hadith scholars, Muhammad ibn Isma’il al-Bukhari, wrote a separate book, and Imam al-Bayhaqi wrote a book many times more voluminous than his, and gave decisive answers to all the doubts of those who do not recite Surah al-Fatihah. Likewise, Mawlana Abdur Rahman Muhaddith Mubarakpuri and Mawlana Irshad al-Haq have written well-argued books on this subject.
