´Abu Idris Al-Khawlani narrated that a man asked Abu Darda’:` “Should I recite when the Imam is reciting?” He said: “A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ) whether there was recitation in every prayer. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Yes.’ A man among the people said: ‘It has become obligatory.’”

´Kathir bin Murrah Al-Hadrami narrated that :` He heard Abu Ad-Darda say: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked: 'Is there recitation in every prayer?' He said: 'Yes.' A man among the Ansar said: 'Is that obligatory?' He (Abu Ad-Darda) turned to me (Kathir), as I was closest of the people to him, and said: 'I think that if the Imam leads the people, that is sufficient for them.'"

924. Commentary: Imam al-Nasa’i rahimahullah has explicitly stated that the one who turned and expressed the opinion was Abu Darda’ radi Allahu anhu, not the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In this statement as well, sufficiency is intended regarding recitation beyond al-Fatihah. (For the discussion on sufficiency, see Hadith: 911.) Furthermore, this narration is weak, as has been clarified below.
