´It was narrated from 'Umar bin Khattab that:` The Prophet used to say: "Whoever performs prayer in congregation at the mosque for forty nights, never missing the first Rak'ah of the 'Isha' prayer, Allah will thereby decree for him salvation from the Fire."

Brief Explanation
1؎: And in Abu Dawud it is stated that every thing has an excellence, and the excellence of prayer is the first takbir (takbir-e-ula), therefore safeguard it. Also, in light of this hadith, some people have said that whoever catches the first rak‘ah with the congregation, it is as if he has caught the opening takbir (takbir tahrimah) with the imam, because in another narration, the first rak‘ah is in place of the first takbir, and regarding catching the first takbir, there are three opinions: first, that one joins exactly with the imam’s takbir; second, that one joins the prayer before the imam begins recitation; third, that one joins before the bowing (ruku‘). The last opinion is easier. Mawlana Waheed al-Zaman (rahimahullah) states that, according to many of the Ahl al-Hadith, merely catching the ruku‘ does not count as having attained the rak‘ah, thus one does not attain the first takbir either. However, if one has enough time to recite Surah al-Fatihah, then he will have attained the rak‘ah, and in this case, it is as if he has attained the first takbir. And Allah knows best.

Commentary:
(1)
By "forty nights" is meant a continuous period of forty days and nights.

(2)
By performing the prayer in congregation continuously for forty days, one develops the habit, and then, in the rest of one’s life, is granted the ability to remain steadfast in attending the congregation. The result of this is attaining Allah’s pleasure and freedom from Hellfire.

(3)
According to some scholars, this narration is hasan (good). However, the wording (لَا تَفُوْتُهُ الرَّكعَةُ الاُوْلٰي) — that the first rak‘ah (unit) of the ‘Isha prayer is not missed — is not established. Without these words, in their view, the narration is sahih (authentic).
