Brief Explanation
1؎ : It is clearly evident from the ahadith of this chapter that congregational prayer (salat al-jama‘ah) is obligatory; attendance at the congregation is very necessary. Permission to leave the congregation is granted only in a few cases: severe cold, a rainy night, or some pressing need such as hunger when food is ready, or the need to relieve oneself. Otherwise, it is not permissible to abandon the congregation due to laziness or indolence.

Commentary: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not act upon this intention because there are women and children in the houses, and taking their circumstances into consideration, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam overlooked it. However, staying behind from the congregation is certainly a cause of the Messenger of Allah’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam displeasure; therefore, it can be counted as a major sin (kabirah).
