Hadith 785

´It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said:` "The houses of the Ansar were far from the mosque and they wanted to move closer. Then the following Verse was revealed: 'We record that which they send before (them), and their traces.'" [Ya-Sin: 12] He said: So they remained (where they were)."

Brief Explanation
a؎: The hadith stating that a house is deprived of blessings (nahusat) if the call to prayer (adhan) is not heard there does not contradict these hadiths, because that deprivation is due to the fact that, in most cases, living in such a house causes one to miss the congregational prayer (jama‘ah), the prayer time is not known, etc. In these hadiths, the virtue is for the person who comes to the mosque from afar and participates in the congregation. Ibn Kathir has explicitly stated that the house which is farther from the mosque is more virtuous. Imam Muslim has narrated from Jabir radi Allahu anhu that our houses were farther from the mosque; we wished to sell them and move closer to the mosque, but the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade us and said: “For every step you take, you will receive a rank (darajah).” And Imam Ahmad has narrated that the virtue of a house that is far from the mosque over a house that is near the mosque is like the virtue of a mounted person over one who is sitting.

Commentary:
For the people of strong resolve (ahl al-‘azimah), it is preferable to live farther from the mosque. However, for ordinary people who are not accustomed to such diligence in performing the prayer, it is better for them to reside near the mosque so that they do not fall short in fulfilling the obligatory acts.
