´It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri that :` He heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Shall I not tell you of something by means of which Allah expiates for sins and increases good deeds?' They said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Performing ablution properly despite difficulties, increasing the number of steps one takes towards the mosque and waiting for the next prayer after prayer.'

1؎: To perfect the ablution (wudu) means that water reaches all the limbs, leaving no part dry, and that one performs the ablution with its etiquettes and recommended acts (sunan). As for walking towards the mosques from a distance, it means that the mosque is far from one's house and one goes there for the congregational prayer (jama‘ah). The farther the mosque, the more steps one will have to take, and for every step there is a reward. Remaining seated in the mosque after one prayer while waiting for the next prayer carries great reward. In another hadith, it is mentioned that as long as one waits, the reward of prayer continues to be written for him.

Commentary: (1) Sins are forgiven through righteous deeds, provided that they are performed with sincerity and in accordance with the Sunnah.
(2) The meaning of taking more steps towards the mosques is that even if the house is far from the mosque, one should still go to the mosque to perform the congregational prayer. Similarly, repeatedly going to the mosque is also included in taking more steps, that is, after the prayer, one goes outside the mosque to the home or market to earn lawful (halal) sustenance or to engage in other permissible activities, and when the time for the next prayer comes, he again sets out towards the mosque. This too increases good deeds and results in the forgiveness of sins.
(3) The meaning of waiting for the prayer is that one should not become so engrossed in business or other work that he forgets the prayer, nor should he perform any prayer outside its prescribed time or abandon it. Rather, even during work, his attention should remain towards the prayer so that as soon as the time for prayer arrives, he sets out towards the mosque. In one narration, this has been called guarding the frontiers (ribaat), as if this too is a kind of jihad.
