´It was narrated that Abu Rafi' said:` "I saw Bilal calling the Adhan in fron of Allah's Messenger, (saying the phrases) two by two, and saying each phrase once in the Iqamah."
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Just as with the adhan (call to prayer), both single (once) and double (twice) forms of the iqamah (second call to prayer) are established.
➋ If the adhan is performed in a single form, then the iqamah will also be single, as is found in the narrations of Hazrat Bilal radi Allahu anhu, in which the words (قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةِ) are to be said. This is because, in the blessed era of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Hazrat Bilal was instructed to say the words of the adhan twice and the words of the iqamah once each. And this is what is superior and better. However, if the adhan is performed in the double form, then the iqamah will also be performed in the double form, as is found in the narration of Abu Mahdhurah radi Allahu anhu. Therefore, it is not correct to perform a double iqamah with a single adhan. (And Allah knows best.) See: (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Adhan, Chapter: The Beginning of the Adhan, Hadith: 606, 603) and Sunan Abi Dawud, al-Salat, Chapter: Regarding the Iqamah, Hadith: 511, 510.
➌ This narration is in agreement with authentic narrations, which is why some scholars have declared it authentic.
