´It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud said:` "The Messenger of Allah rebuked us for staying up (talking) after the 'Isha'."

Our esteemed researcher has declared this narration weak in terms of its chain of transmission, whereas other scholars, based on additional supporting evidence, have graded it as hasan (good). See: (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal: 212-6, 213, and al-Sahihah no. 3453).

What is meant here is the old Arab custom of holding gatherings for poetry, storytelling, and similar activities at night; purposeful and necessary conversation is not prohibited.
