´It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:` "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Whoever departs this world with sincerity towards Allah, worshipping Him alone with no partner, establishing regular prayer and paying Zakat, he dies while Allah is pleased with him.'" Anas said: "This is the religion of Allah which was brought by the Messengers, and which they conveyed from their Lord before there arose the confusion of people's chattering and conflicting desires. This is confirmed in the Book of Allah, in one of the Last Verses to be revealed, where Allah says: "But if they repent." Renounce their idols and worshipping them; "And establish Salat and give Zakat." And Allah says in another Verse." But if they repent, perform Salat and give Zakat, then they are your brethren in religion." (Da'if) Another chain with similar wording.

Brief Explanation
1؎: The complete verse is only as much as has been mentioned above. In it, Allah Ta'ala describes the condition of the polytheists, stating that if, after repentance, they establish prayer (salah) and give alms (zakat), then they are your brothers. And the summary of the hadith is that Allah Ta'ala sent His messengers to teach tawhid (monotheism), and the foundation of religion rests upon tawhid and sincerity (ikhlas). Among outward righteous deeds, prayer (salah) and alms (zakat) are the most important and fundamental pillars.

Commentary: (1) The complete words of the first verse are: ﴿إِذَاانسَلَخَالأَشهُرُ الحُرُمُفَاقتُلُواالمُشرِكينَحَيثُوَجَدتُموهُموَخُذوهُموَاحصُروهُموَاقعُدوالَهُمكُلَّمَرصَدٍفَإِن تابوا وَأَقامُواالصَّلوةَوَءاتَوُاالزَّكوةَفَخَلّواسَبيلَهُمإِنَّاللَّهَغَفورٌ رَحيمٌ﴾ (at-Tawbah: 5) “Then when the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them, besiege them, and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, establish the prayer, and give the zakat, then let them go their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” Its explanation has been given by Anas (radi Allahu anhu) that repentance here means repentance from polytheism (shirk).
(2) From these verses it is understood that a people can only be accepted as Muslims when, along with affirming tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and the messengership, they also adopt the practical matters, i.e., prayer (salah) and zakat. In case of denial, they will be declared disbelievers (kuffar) and jihad will be waged against them, just as Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) deduced from this very verse and waged jihad against those who withheld zakat.
(3) This narration is weak, but the matters mentioned in it are supported by authentic narrations.
