´Mughith bin Sumayi said:` "I prayed the Subh with 'Abdullah bin Zubair in the darkness, and when he said the Taslim, I turned to Ibn 'Umar and said: 'What is this prayer?' He said: 'This is how we prayed with the Messenger of Allah and with Abu Bakr and 'Umar. When 'Umar was stabbed, 'Uthman delayed it until there was light.'"

1؎: Upon seeing Uthman radi Allahu anhu performing the Fajr prayer in «اسفار» (brightness), some of the Tabi‘in developed the assumption that the way of the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum was indeed to perform the Fajr prayer in «اسفار», as is transmitted from Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i. However, the reason for performing it in «اسفار» was due to fear for one’s life; otherwise, the original time for this prayer is that which Ibn ‘Umar radi Allahu anhuma described: in deep darkness. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the two Shaykhs (Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and ‘Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhuma) continued to do so.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Commentary: (1) The most virtuous and Sunnah time for the Fajr prayer is indeed its earliest time; therefore, during the caliphates of Abu Bakr and Umar (radi Allahu anhuma), this practice was maintained.
(2) Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) performed the Fajr prayer at the time of brightness due to a temporary expediency. It was not a permanent change. Therefore, Zubair (radi Allahu anhu), not perceiving any need for delay, performed the Fajr prayer at its earliest time in accordance with the original Sunnah.
(3) If, for any reason, a practice is initiated which is not better, then when the opportunity arises, it should be discontinued and the correct practice should be established.
