Hadith 612

´It was narrated from 'Aishah that:` The Prophet said: "If anyone of wakes up and sees some wetness, but he does not think that he had an erotic dream, let him have a bath. But if he thinks that he had an erotic dream but he does not see any wetness, then he does not have to take a bath."

Commentary:
This narration is weak in its chain of transmission; however, this narration is also transmitted through several other routes, therefore, according to some researchers, this narration becomes strong due to those routes. See:
(al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah: 43/265/266)
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has also graded it as hasan. See: (Mishkat al-Albani, Hadith: 441)
Moreover, the issue mentioned in this narration is also established by the narration of Sahih Muslim, which is as follows: Umm Sulaym radi Allahu anha came to the service of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and asked, “In the case of a woman experiencing a wet dream (i.e., sexual discharge during sleep), is ritual bath (ghusl) obligatory upon her just as it is upon a man?” He replied:
“Yes, when she sees the water (i.e., discharge).” (Sahih Muslim, al-Hayd, Hadith: 313)
From this, it is clear that there is no difference between men and women in this matter.
Whoever experiences a wet dream (i.e., sexual discharge during sleep), whether they remember it or not, but if their clothes are wet, then ritual bath (ghusl) is obligatory upon them.
Provided that their clothes are not wet in the manner of urine, because in that case, ritual bath (ghusl) will not be obligatory.
And if they remember experiencing a wet dream in their sleep, but there is no sign (moisture) on their clothes, then ritual bath (ghusl) is not obligatory.
