Commentary:
(1)
Allah Ta'ala has granted the Ummah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam the honor that it will never go completely astray in the way that previous communities went astray, such that none among them remained upon the straight path.
إِلَّا مَنْ شَاءَ الله.
(2)
The true religion (din al-haqq) is preserved until the Day of Resurrection, because the Noble Qur'an is also preserved, and the Prophetic hadith is preserved both in narration and in practice.
(3)
Regarding the group mentioned in the hadith, most scholars have understood it to refer to the people of hadith (ashab al-hadith), who, after the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, do not consider anyone to have absolute authority.
The more a person acts upon the Prophetic guidance and the Prophetic example, the more he will be included among those intended by this hadith.
(4)
The meaning of this hadith is not that the people of truth will be protected from trials and tribulations, but rather that trials will not be able to turn them away from the path of truth.
Just as is evident from the lives of Imam Malik, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahimahullah, and other great figures of the religion, in the end Allah granted them honor and their stance was accepted as correct, because it was based on the texts of the Qur'an and Sunnah.
(5)
The meaning of "until the Day of Resurrection" is that, before the Day of Resurrection, as long as Islam remains, because the last generation of the children of Adam, upon whom the Resurrection will be established, will be such that they will not even mention the name of Allah, as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
"The Hour will not come until (the situation will be such that) Allah, Allah will not be said upon the earth." (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Iman, Chapter: The Disappearance of Faith at the End of Time, Hadith: 148)
