1؎: SubhanAllah, our Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had a very refined temperament and was fond of cleanliness, and for this reason, he greatly liked fragrance and had intense dislike for foul odors. He was extremely mindful of the purity and cleanliness of his clothing, home, body, and everything else, as is established from other ahadith. To such an extent that he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would even avoid eating those things whose smell was unpleasant, such as raw onions or garlic, etc.
2؎: It is possible that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did this upon returning from a journey, or after completing one turn and before beginning the next, or that he did so with the consent of all his wives.

Commentary: From this hadith, it is understood that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) paid great attention to cleanliness and purity. For this reason, he had an immense liking for fragrance, while he greatly disliked foul odors and things that emit unpleasant smells. Therefore, he forbade the use of onions, garlic, or other such items that produce an offensive odor when eaten, before coming for prayer.
