´It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that :` A man asked him: "How much water should I pour over my head when I m sexually impure?" He said: "the messenger of Allah used to pour three handfuls of water over his head." The man said: "My hair is long." He said: "The Messenger of Allah had more hair than you and he was cleaner."

Hadith Takhrij« تفرد بہ ابن ماجہ ، ( تحفة الأشراف : 13063 ) ، وقد أخرجہ : مسند احمد ( 2/251 ) ( حسن صحیح ) »
1؎ : In this hadith, it is clearly stated that three handfuls of water are sufficient for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to pour over his head. In reality, with three handfuls, the entire head becomes thoroughly wet, and that is sufficient for ritual bath (ghusl).
Saeed Maqbari narrates: A man said to Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): I am a person with a lot of hair, pouring water three times with both hands will not be enough for me. So Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The hair of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was even more than this, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was purer than you, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) would pour water on his head only three times.

Benefit: In this hadith, an issue regarding the ritual bath (ghusl) after major impurity (janabah) is mentioned: that water should be poured over the head three times. Its detail is that one handful should be poured on the right side of the head, the second on the left side of the head, and the third in the middle of the head. This detail is found in Sahih Muslim and Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah.
