Hadith 570

´It was narrated from Hakam and Salamah in Kuhail that:` They asked 'Abdullah bin Abi Awfa about dry ablution. He said: "The Prophet commanded 'Ammar to do like this;' and he struck the ground with his palms, shook the dust off and wiped his face. (Da'if)Hakam said, "and his hands," Salamah said, "and his elbows."

Commentary:
The meaning is that one narrator (Hakam) said: After wiping the face, he joined both his hands together (and this is the correct account), and another narrator (Salamah) said that then he wiped his hands up to the elbows. This statement is contrary to the narration of reliable narrators. Most likely for this reason, the words of the second narrator—"he wiped up to his elbows"—have been declared objectionable (munkar) by some scholars, while the rest of the narration has been declared authentic.
