Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
The previous three narrations are weak in terms of their chain of transmission, whereas the issue itself—that is, wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn)—is correct and established by the narrations of the two Sahihs (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

Benefits and Issues:

The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in its chain (isnad) by our esteemed researcher, whereas other scholars have deemed it hasan (good) based on supporting evidences (shawahid). The researchers of Musnad Ahmad, as well as the great scholar Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, have discussed this narration at length and have also mentioned its supporting evidences, from which the opinion that the hadith is hasan appears to be closer to correctness. Therefore, despite the aforementioned narration being weak in its chain, it is still actionable. And Allah knows best. For further details, see: (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 38/83, 84 and Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud (detailed) by al-Albani: 1/266, 268, no. 144)

Najashi rahimahullah was the king of Abyssinia (Habasha). Before the migration to Madinah, the Muslims who migrated to Abyssinia were treated with respect by Najashi rahimahullah. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the absentee funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) for Najashi rahimahullah upon his passing.

It is permissible to wear black socks.
