´It was narrated that 'Umar bin Khattab said:` "The Messenger of Allah said: 'There is no Muslim who performs ablution and does it well, then says: Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan `abduhu wa rasuluhu (I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger),' (except that) eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he will enter through whichever one he wants.'"

In one narration of Sahih Muslim, this supplication is also reported in these words: (أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ)
(Sahih Muslim, Book of Purification, Chapter: The Recommended Remembrance After Ablution, Hadith: 234)

The meaning of the gates of Paradise being opened is that the gates of goodness have been opened for him.
The good deeds which that person could not perform without ablution (wudu), now he can perform them; therefore, now he may perform whatever good deed he wishes.
And it also means that after his death, all the gates of Paradise will be opened for him.
There will be no obstacle for him to enter Paradise.

For entering, even one gate is sufficient, but opening more gates is to honor him, so that his rank and status become evident and he attains even greater happiness.

148. Commentary:
➊ In some ahadith, after the testimony of faith (kalimah shahadah), these words are also mentioned: «اللھم اجعلني من التوابین واجعلني من المتطھرین» [جامع الترمذي ، الطھارۃ ، حدیث : 55]
“O Allah! Make me among those who repent abundantly and those who keep themselves pure.” Therefore, it is permissible to recite these words along with the testimony of faith. However, turning one’s face towards the sky and pointing with the finger while reciting the supplication after ablution (wudu) is not established from any authentic hadith; thus, one should refrain from this practice.
➋ “He may enter from whichever gate he wishes.” This and other similar promises are conditional, meaning: provided that no such act has been committed by the person which would necessarily result in non-forgiveness or entry into Hell. And Allah knows best.
