Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Some sins appear minor in the eyes of common people, but in reality, they are grave. For example: using abusive language, lying in jest, a man covering his ankles with his lower garment such as shalwar, tahband, or pajama, etc. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Keep your lower garment raised to the middle of the shin; if that is not possible, then at least above the ankles, and avoid letting the lower garment hang below the ankles, for this is arrogance.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Libas, Chapter: What Has Been Reported Regarding Letting the Lower Garment Hang, Hadith: 4084)

➋ When a sin becomes widespread in society, it no longer appears as a sin in the eyes of the public, even if it is a major sin (kabirah). Scholars should especially prohibit such sins and clarify the Islamic rulings regarding them.

➌ Even for those sins that are actually minor (saghirah), caution is necessary, because by committing minor sins repeatedly, the overall amount of sin becomes very great, due to which a person becomes deserving of punishment. In addition, by not caring about minor sins, one develops the audacity to commit major sins (kabirah). Therefore, it is better to avoid them as well.
