Hadith 4222

´It was narrated that Kulthum Al-Khuza’i said:` “A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, how can I know, when I have done something good, that I have done well, and if I have done something bad, that I have done a bad deed?’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘If your neighbors say that you have done something good, then you have done well, and if they say that you have done something bad, then you have done something bad.’”

Benefits and Issues:

Ordinary good deeds and bad deeds are such that the average Muslim recognizes them as such, even if, in practice, he is lazy in performing good deeds and accustomed to bad ones.

Moral virtues and flaws are most well known to one’s neighbors. When a person comes to know that his neighbors do not consider him good, he should strive to reform himself.

Nowadays, due to lack of knowledge and the prevalence of incorrect customs and traditions, some good practices have been abandoned. When someone acts upon them, the public criticizes him. And some wrong practices have become so widespread that people act upon them thinking they are religious rulings. When one avoids such innovations (bid‘ah), people think that the Sunnah is being denied. In such matters, the opinion of the general public does not hold weight; rather, one should consult such scholars who can distinguish between authentic (sahih) and weak (da‘if) hadiths and can understand issues from the texts of the Qur’an and Hadith. One should not rely merely on preachers who deliver spicy speeches.
